Walking as Practice residency at Björkö Konstnod

I was selected to contribute to the process-based residency programme ‘Walking As Practice’ in the northern Stockholm archipelago. The focus was on how walking is interlocked in our diverse artistic practices through fieldwork and seminars.

I used the residency to refine the goals and intended outputs of my long-term Coastal Narratives project through comparative research and collaborative conversation with other practitioners. In particular, I focused my research on the question of Allemansrätten (the Swedish concept of right to roam) beyond a legal framework and towards one that questions the limits of access rights for people of colour in rural contexts. I conducted a literature review on harassment and hostility in (White) European rural spaces, and work originating from the increasingly populated field of Black rurality studies.

I also took part in the residency activities, including a presentation of my work, various group walks and performative walks, the creation of a walking score (‘The UNO Score’ – see below), and contributing to an exposition on Research Catalogue.

My month-long project, alongside that of the other participating artists, was shortlisted for the Marŝarto24 Awards.
